TAMPA — Cam Schrittler’s Return to the Mound

Cam Schrittler downplayed his recent back issues, calling them “not important,” but his return to the bullpen mound on Tuesday certainly felt significant.

Last week, the Yankees held him back to address inflammation in his mid-back and left latissimus dorsi. If he continues with his bullpen sessions and recovers as planned, he should be ready in time for the regular season kickoff.

“We weren’t too worried,” said manager Aaron Boone. “Given where we are in the season, we wanted to ensure it didn’t escalate into something more serious.”

“Everything went well. So, we just keep moving forward.”

Before his brief hiatus, Schrittler had been making good progress in his pitching regimen, but the Yankees thought it best for him to rest for a few days.

He’s anticipated to need just one or two more sessions in the bullpen before he’s ready to face live batters again.

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton was practicing when news broke about MLB Players Association Executive Director Tony Clark’s resignation. He indicated he wanted to gather more details before making a statement.

Clark stepped down after an internal investigation uncovered an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, according to a report.

“It’s not ideal timing,” Stanton remarked, especially considering the approaching labor negotiations ahead of the current CBA’s expiration on December 1.

Elmer Rodriguez is set to start for the Yankees in their Grapefruit League opener against the Orioles this Friday in Sarasota, Florida.

Rodriguez is recognized as a promising talent and plans to leave camp early in March to pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

Another top prospect, Carlos LaGrange, is expected to take the mound for Saturday’s home opener against the Tigers.

In other news, Lewis Gil completed three innings during live batting practice, upping his pitch count to 42. Ryan McMahon, who missed Monday’s training due to flu symptoms, returned on Tuesday. The Yankees have also made their first roster cuts of spring, sending RHP Alexander Corniel and C Abraham Gutierrez to minor league camp, leaving 70 players in major league camp.
