Yankees Grab Victory Over Rays in Tampa

PETERSBURG, Fla. — In a familiar pattern of offensive struggles, the Yankees managed only three hits on Monday night.

However, Jose Caballero and Ben Rice proved to be game changers while Cam Schrittler delivered an outstanding pitching performance.

Caballero launched two home runs and Rice added another, leading the Yankees to a 5-1 win against the Rays in a key four-game series at Tropicana Field.

Caballero’s notable contribution included a three-run homer in the fifth inning, marking the Yankees’ first hit against Rays pitcher Griffin Jacks. He followed that up with a solo shot in the eighth, while Rice secured a solo home run in the ninth inning.

Schrittler pitched eight strong innings, allowing just four soft hits and not issuing any walks, while striking out eight batters. This victory improved the Yankees’ record to 50-40, marking only their second win in their last eleven games and reducing their deficit to three games behind the Rays, who sit at 52-36 and lead the AL East.

Despite a rocky previous outing where he gave up six runs and four home runs against the Tigers, Schrittler delivered when it mattered most. The Yankees had been struggling, having fallen from a solid division lead to a four-game deficit after losing nine of ten games.

The evening began poorly for the Yankees, as they sent 13 batters to the plate without getting anyone on base. But then, in the fifth inning, things changed. After Jason Dominguez and Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, Caballero hit a powerful three-run homer, putting the Yankees up 3-0.

Caballero, who took a starting position over Anthony Volpe, added his 10th home run of the season in the eighth, extending the lead to 4-1 with a strong bat flip.

Rice’s ninth-inning homer provided some added security with the score at 5-1.

The Rays managed only one run against Schrittler, occurring in the fifth inning when Chandler Simpson reached first with a soft grounder, allowing Richie Palacios to score with a soft line drive to left field.
