Toronto – Cam Schlittler’s Performance

In a game that didn’t quite match his MLB debut from two weeks prior, Cam Schlittler still managed to do his part. He delivered five solid innings that helped the Yankees secure a tight 5-4 victory against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Tuesday night.

Ben Rice praised Schlittler, noting, “He was great. He pitches with a lot of confidence and shows maturity. Even with traffic on the bases, he stays calm. These are the traits that are so important early in his career.”

Schlittler, who had been pushed back in the rotation due to bicep discomfort during the All-Star break, reported feeling fine. He admitted to falling behind batters more often than desired, but still managed to limit the Blue Jays to just two runs over five innings. Throughout the game, he allowed ten base runners, with seven hits and three walks, and struck out three.

“I’m just fighting through it,” Schlittler remarked. “The first outing felt smoother. Today was a bit more challenging, but I’m thankful for the defense supporting me.”

Despite a few struggles, Schlittler managed to navigate through key situations. He hit Alejandro Kirk with a fastball at 99 mph to end one threat and escaped another jam with the bases loaded, causing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to pop out.

Cody Bellinger reflected on Schlittler’s presence on the mound, saying, “He really composed himself. It’s like electricity out there; you can feel it. But he appears very confident in his skills.”

At just 24 years old, Schlittler is definitely one to keep an eye on in the upcoming games. Manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence in Schlittler’s future, mentioning, “He had a few walks while throwing strikes. That’s something he’ll want to improve. But overall, going five innings and putting us in a winning position was impressive.”

Meanwhile, Fernando Cruz has started a throwing program after being placed on the injured list in late June. Although he might take up to a month to return, it’s an encouraging sign he’s on the mend.

Boone spoke about Cruz’s progress, stating, “It’s a gradual program since he’s not fully healed yet. He’s doing really well. After throwing recently, he felt great. Although, considering his injury, it’s better than expected. We just need to be cautious about rushing him back too soon.”

On the other hand, Ryan Yalbrow is facing some challenges in recovery from his low-grade tension injury. He was put on the injured list a week before Cruz, and his return to throwing has been slow.

As for Max Fly, he confirmed no restrictions for his start on Wednesday following issues that kept him out since July 12. He participated in a light bullpen session last Friday and a more intense one on Sunday, setting him up for the game.

Boone noted, “Initially, he was just taking it easy, but now he’s back to his regular pitching. We’re keeping an eye on it, but he’s ready to go.”

Lastly, Yerry de Los Santos is also in the mix, having begun his rehabilitation assignment after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow. His return seems near as he stated, “We need to get back in action quickly.”
