Cam Schlittler's solid Yankees debut marred by a seventh-inning setback

CHICAGO — Cam Schrittler’s Frustrating Night on the Mound

For most of Wednesday night, Cam Schrittler had a solid outing, but the Yankees right-hander ended up feeling disappointed after a tough 6-5 loss in the 12th inning to the White Sox at Lehto Field.

Schrittler only allowed one hit that broke a bat during the fourth inning when the Yankees were ahead 4-0. He did allow a base hit into the seventh inning and issued a walk to Munetaka Murakami on a full count. Following that, a 98 mph sinker hit Miguel Vargas’s hands, and shortly after, Andrew Benintendi smashed a double down the right field line that turned the tide in favor of the White Sox, ultimately ending Schrittler’s night.

“The walks are really frustrating,” Schrittler mentioned, reflecting on his first walk in three starts. “I was trying to hit Vargas, so I basically handed it to them. It’s just frustrating. But it’s baseball; sometimes things like this happen.”

Schrittler showcased a sharper curveball and struck out eight batters, but he regretted the pitch choice to Benintendi, a moment discussed with Gerrit Cole in the dugout.

“I was shaking. The pitch to Benintendi wasn’t executed properly. I think if I’d followed the pitch Wells called, it might have worked better,” Schrittler shared, taking responsibility for the outcome.

As the trade deadline approaches, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has played a key role in the team’s acquisitions in recent years, including bringing in players like David Bednar and Alex Verdugo. He is again voicing his thoughts to the front office about potential additions.

“Oh yeah,” he said, chuckling at the thought, though he withheld any specific names.

Boone has maintained communication with general manager Brian Cashman, providing some “thought bubbles” as they navigate which teams might sell players leading up to the deadline on Monday.

“Ultimately, the front office has been working hard on this for weeks. It’s all about evaluating other teams and our own, getting ready to act when an opportunity arises,” Boone explained. “They’re in Tampa, prepared to make moves as necessary.”

In other news, Giancarlo Stanton is still in the running phase but hasn’t reached base yet, Boone said. “He just needs to elevate his running intensity. He’s running, but once he’s close to playing in a game, we’ll let you know. He’s not there yet.”

Carlos Rodon is set to throw around 30 pitches in two simulated innings on Wednesday against Double-A Somerset as he gears up for a rehab assignment, hoping to return to the Yankees by mid-to-late August.

On August 8, the Yankees revealed the roster for their annual Old Timers Day game. New participants include Dellin Betances, Todd Frazier, Adam Ottavino, and David Weathers. However, notable absences include Derek Jeter, who only attended the event in 2023, and Brett Gardner, who hasn’t been involved since his last game in 2021.
