Cam Skatebo Working on His Game
Cam Skatebo is focused on enhancing his playing style rather than scaling it back. Although you might catch him dodging defenders occasionally, he hasn’t completely abandoned his signature aggressive approach.
“Coach believes in that,” Skatebo said, referring to head coach John Harbaugh. “I enjoy running over people. Being physical is what I prioritize. After my injury, I’m learning how to take fewer hits and navigate around opponents more effectively instead of just trying to plow through them. There are times I’ve realized I could have gained extra yards with just a slight shift in direction.”
“I think these are just a few aspects I’m aiming to incorporate into my skill set—tools to help me stay healthy and successful moving forward,” he added.
Last October, Skatebo faced a severe right ankle injury, which included a tibia fracture and dislocation. Thankfully, he’s back on his feet and was active from the beginning of training camp, making a modest contribution of 19 yards on four carries during the preseason opener against the Vikings.
“When I stepped on the field Saturday, I wasn’t thinking about any lasting effects—like brain damage or anything. I was just pumped to play; the adrenaline kicked in, and all the worries disappeared,” Skatebo recalled, expressing how eager he is to be back on the field.
Meanwhile, it’s been a hectic day for the Giants. They brought in quarterback Jake Hayner and linebacker Chandler Martin while parting ways with running back Dante Miller due to a groin injury he sustained in the recent preseason game.
Additionally, veteran running back Najee Harris made an appearance. Harbaugh is well-acquainted with Harris, who previously played with the Steelers before dealing with an Achilles injury.
“Seeing him there was a bit of a thrill, honestly. He’s an impressive player,” Harbaugh noted. “He’s still recovering and not quite back into full football shape yet, but when he is, he’ll be a valuable asset with so much experience.”
Harris has topped 1,000 rushing yards in four of his five seasons, although last year he was limited to just three games due to his previous injury.
