Giants Running Back Cam Skattebo’s Controversial Play
Cam Skattebo, the New York Giants’ running back, has a reputation for being a bit unpredictable on the field. He plays with intensity, often charging into defenders without hesitation. However, during a recent game against the Houston Texans, NFL officials seemed to think he may have overstepped the mark while attempting to run over one of the Texans’ players.
In the first quarter, Skattebo received a handoff from quarterback J.J. McCarthy. After spotting an opening, he lowered his helmet and made contact with safety M.J. Stewart. The result? A penalty flag for unnecessary roughness due to the helmet maneuver.
What exactly was Skattebo supposed to do here? Helmet-to-helmet collisions are fairly common in the NFL, and flags typically come out when a defenseless player gets hit or if a defender leads with their helmet while tackling—not the other way around. Even the Giants’ head coach, John Harbaugh, appeared confused about the call.
The matchup against the Texans was tight, with both teams heading into halftime tied 14-14. Interestingly, Skattebo had faced scrutiny after not getting any carries the week before against the New Orleans Saints. This seemingly communicated some kind of message, though Harbaugh insisted it wasn’t a planned decision to bench Skattebo.
“It wasn’t by design for him not to carry the ball,” Harbaugh explained. “When he was in there, we just didn’t call any runs. Our aim was to give each back a fair chance and see who got going.” The game plans are complex, and, well, they don’t always go as intended.
Concerns have arisen regarding Skattebo’s fumbles, yet they likely weren’t significant enough to justify sidelining him for that particular match. He certainly played a role in the offense during this game.
