Cam Skattebo’s Controversial Play in Giants’ Victory
In his early days in the NFL, Cam Skattebo has made a name for himself by delivering bone-crushing hits to help the New York Giants. However, during a recent game against the Houston Texans, he found himself on the receiving end of an unnecessary roughness penalty. The officials took issue with his hit on safety M.J. Stewart, which came after a significant gain.
Skattebo was understandably upset about the call, as was head coach John Harbaugh, who had to restrain his running back while showing his own frustration over the penalty.
After the game, where Skattebo’s impressive 42-yard run in overtime paved the way for Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown, he didn’t hold back when discussing the league’s mixed signals regarding his playing style. “Yeah, I’ll keep that conversation between us,” he said, referring to his chat with the official. He continued, “The NFL loves to highlight my plays, but then they also want to penalize me for them. If I keep getting flagged or fined, I might as well be playing for free.”
His assertive demeanor reflected his commitment to the team, stating that he’ll continue to give his all on the field, regardless of any consequences.
It’s clear the NFL appreciates Skattebo’s hard-nosed running style, reminiscent of traditional running backs. Yet, the league has also been trying to enforce stricter rules against helmet-to-helmet hits, which was the basis of the flag thrown against him.
Looking at the replay of the incident, many fans felt compelled to voice their disagreement, labeling the penalty as “soft” and “bizarre” on social media.
It’s rare for refs to penalize offensive players in scenarios like this, which contributed to the outcry. Still, as Skattebo pointed out, this may lead to fines from the league due to the unnecessary roughness call.
Turning to Skattebo’s performance, it was a significant turnaround after he was shut out with no carries in the previous game. Many speculated that Harbaugh had benched him after a costly fumble against the Washington Commanders, a match that ended in a tie. If that fumble hadn’t occurred, who knows? The Giants could have had a 5-2 record instead.
“It wasn’t by design for him not to carry the ball,” Harbaugh commented post-game, explaining that they simply hadn’t called any running plays while he was on the field. The game didn’t go as planned, especially considering they had fallen behind by 24 points.
This week, Skattebo had the opportunity to silence the critics surrounding his earlier fumble issues, rushing for 124 yards on 17 carries and scoring a touchdown. With the Giants totaling four rushing touchdowns, Skattebo’s performance might just reaffirm his position as the lead back moving forward.
As the Giants head into a bye week, it seems Skattebo’s aggressive playing style will remain unchanged when they return to face the Philadelphia Eagles on the road.
