Cam Skattebo's devastating fumble became a nightmare for the Giants

Giants Struggle Against Saints in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – The Giants started off a bit shaky but seemed to be making a comeback, edging closer to the red zone and possibly a touchdown.

But then things took a turn.

They fumbled the ball and were quickly in trouble, their offensive momentum fading away.

“They always tell us to protect the ball, and that’s what I aim to do,” Cam Scattebo shared in the visitor locker room after the game at the Caesars Superdome. “That’s part of my role.”

This time, there was no celebratory backflip from Scattebo after a touchdown—his mistake contributed to a 26-14 defeat against the Saints.

When Scattebo took his first play in the fourth quarter, they had a second and seventh from the New Orleans 12-yard line, but space was tight. As he tried to push forward, defensive lineman Brian Brissy struck from behind, knocking the ball loose and causing a fumble.

Not great news for the Giants.

Things only got worse. Jordan Howden of the Saints capitalized on the fumble, scooping up the ball and sprinting for an 86-yard touchdown return, extending their lead by 12 points.

The Giants harmed their own chances with five costly turnovers, and it appeared that luck was not on their side.

“I fumbled,” Scattebo admitted. “I should have held onto the ball better. He got me from behind, and I just didn’t secure it enough.”

Scattebo, the Giants’ fourth pick from Arizona, had quickly become a fan favorite thanks to his impressive ability to evade tackles. He managed 59 yards on 15 carries in this game.

His longest run was only nine yards, but he consistently found ways to break through.

After the shocking fumble and touchdown return, Scattebo sat on the bench, seeking comfort from his teammates.

He waved off the support, showing resilience.

“I like to move on; I think about the next play,” he said. “I’m the type who looks ahead, discusses what went wrong, and then prepares for what’s next.”

With Tyrone Tracy Jr. nursing a shoulder injury, Scattebo is stepping up to be a key player for the Giants, leading the team with 63 rushing attempts this season. He acknowledges he’s had just one fumble in his NFL career.

“We lost this game, and it’s clear. I’m not a coach, but we really need to do a better job of protecting the ball,” he concluded.
