Skatebo Suffers Serious Injury
Kam Skatebo’s injury turned out to be quite severe, as expected.
The rookie running back for the Giants sustained a dislocated ankle that will end his season during their tough 38-20 defeat against the Eagles on Sunday. Along with the dislocation, he also fractured his fibula and tore a deltoid ligament. Reports from NFL Network confirmed the injuries.
Following the game, Skatebo underwent surgery to “close the wound” and was released from a hospital in Philadelphia by Monday morning.
He expressed gratitude on social media, saying, “Thank you for everyone’s support!! The surgery went well, and I want to thank the city of Philadelphia for the excellent care. I felt loved and supported throughout my time at the hospital with friends and family ❤️ Thanks to all the doctors and staff for their efforts.” Skatebo added, “This is just the beginning of my journey, and I can’t wait to share it with you all! I believe God has a plan for me. Stay on track, and everything will be okay, BRB 🫡 #LFG.”
Questions arose regarding the need for immediate surgery after the game, and the circumstances of his injury clarified that necessity. Medical staff put Skatebo in an air cast after he was tackled, and his ankle bent in a distressing way. The graphic nature of the injury was such that some broadcasters avoided showing replays.
Since Skatebo’s injury resulted in an open wound, it required prompt intervention, which differed from the delayed surgery for other players. Dr. Guillem González Lomas, an orthopedic specialist, explained that open injuries are considered emergencies due to the risk of infection. Immediate treatment typically involves flushing the wound with sterile saline and administering antibiotics.
The rapid decision to perform surgery on Sunday night suggested the medical team felt it was crucial, especially since swelling could complicate further treatment.
As for Skatebo’s return timeline, Giants’ manager Brian Daboll mentioned he faces a “long road ahead.” There’s an expectation for Skatebo to be ready for training camp in about eight months, with some sources suggesting he could be back by July 2026.
The Giants are hopeful he will participate in their offseason program.
“The devil is in the details,” Dr. González Lomas remarked, emphasizing that Skatebo’s recovery timeline depends on how well he navigates each recovery stage. Given the significant trauma to his ankle, it will take time for everything to settle down. Proper care is vital for recovery.
