Jordi Fernandez on Cam Thomas’ Playmaking

Jordi Fernandez expressed satisfaction with Cam Thomas’ playmaking skills, reassuring everyone that he isn’t overly concerned about his shooting performance.

That said, it looks like Thomas won’t see an immediate rise in his playing time.

Since coming back from a hamstring injury on December 27, the Nets’ top scorer from last season has been relegated to a backup role. He came off the bench for the tenth consecutive game on Sunday and played nearly 24 minutes. Fernandez mentioned that he doesn’t foresee an increase in those minutes just yet.

“Yes, we’re pleased with his current production and his willingness to facilitate,” Fernandez noted, referring to the team’s recent 124-102 loss in Chicago. “We know how talented he is at scoring and he’s improving defensively.”

Fernandez continued, “For now, we’re content with where he is. We need him to maintain that level for a bit longer because, honestly, his physical condition is paramount. We’re being cautious.”

Last season, Thomas had a rough time, limited to just 25 games due to multiple hamstring injuries, including another setback earlier this season. Since returning, he’s averaged 12 points with a shooting percentage of .408, along with .340 from three-point range over about 22.5 minutes of play. Unfortunately, he scored just three points on 1-of-6 shooting in a game where the team really required him to step up in place of the sidelined Michael Porter Jr.

“I mean, I just can’t believe he went 1-of-6 again,” Fernandez said. “I’m fine with him taking those shots, though. He recorded 10 assists with just one turnover, which is fantastic. He knows the game; he’s a smart player.”

Fernandez highlighted that despite the defense being aggressive, Thomas managed to create opportunities for his teammates, who converted those chances. “I’m proud of how he played. He shared the ball effectively and consistently executed those simple plays, which is the playmaking we want from CT.”

The Nets have had a struggle this season, recording an 8-12 record without Thomas and just 4-16 with him, including a brief 5:35 stint against Indiana.

Nick Claxton commented on Thomas’ commitment, saying, “He’s really pushing himself. He remains engaged, and if he keeps this up, I think we’ll see him start making those shots.”
