Altercation Between Titans Players at Practice
A recent practice session for the Tennessee Titans took an unexpected turn when rookie quarterback Cam Ward found himself in a physical scuffle with veteran defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons. The situation escalated to the point where teammates had to step in and separate the two.
Ward, the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, reflected on the altercation, suggesting it was a needed competitive moment for the team. “Jeff is incredibly strong,” he commented. “It was actually fun, and I think we needed something like that. Competing with Jeff is exciting, and I’m looking forward to having him as a teammate.”
The incident sparked when Ward celebrated a touchdown pass to receiver Calvin Ridley. He playfully teased Simmons with his “Zombieland” celebration, which didn’t sit well with Simmons. In response, Simmons pushed Ward’s face mask with both hands, leading to the clash.
Observing the ruckus, the Titans offensive line quickly rushed in to defend their quarterback, including left tackle Dan Moore Jr., who voiced his disapproval of the hit on Ward. “That’s definitely not okay. Touching the quarterback like that is a no-go,” Moore stated as he reacted to the altercation.
This back-and-forth between Ward and Simmons has garnered attention since their paths crossed. “Honestly, whenever I’m on the field, he’s the first person that comes to my mind,” Ward admitted, hinting at a playful rivalry.
Head coach Brian Callahan also weighed in after the practice fray. He acknowledged that while touching the quarterback is improper, he appreciated the team dynamics and camaraderie. “If the quarterback is willing to engage in play like that, then I’m all for it,” Callahan said. Simmons added that it’s the nature of training camp, where emotions can often run high as players protect each other.
Ward will undoubtedly face numerous challenges as he embarks on his first NFL season. It seems that interactions like this are part of gearing up for the regular season ahead.
As Ward looks forward to his NFL regular-season debut against the Denver Broncos on September 7th, it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressures of playing at this level.
