Frustration Peaks for Cam Ward as Titans Fall to Colts

The frustration for Cam Ward reached a tipping point on Sunday during the Titans’ 38-14 loss to the Colts.

As the No. 1 pick from this year’s draft, Ward was visibly upset and reportedly yelled at interim head coach Mike McCoy on a CBS broadcast. This incident occurred when the Titans chose to punt on fourth-and-3 from the Colts’ 43-yard line early in the third quarter.

“If it was up to me, I’d take every opportunity I can. That’s what I want in my football career. We missed a chance to secure a first down and maintain team momentum,” Ward expressed to reporters after the game. With this defeat in Indianapolis, the Titans now sit at 1-7.

“We weren’t that far behind at that point, so I supported the decision, but ultimately, we shouldn’t find ourselves in that position. We need to convert on third down,” he added.

The failed third-down conversion featured a run from Tony Pollard right near the line of scrimmage.

Ward noted that he hadn’t had a chance to discuss the decision with McCoy during the game.

“I think every time I hit 50 points, that’s the target I aim for. I want to be aiming for that; I know I will be aiming for that eventually,” he remarked.

This decision soon proved costly, as Jonathan Taylor turned a play into an 80-yard touchdown on the subsequent attempt. The Titans then went three-and-out, allowing the Colts to score another touchdown and seal the win, now at an impressive 7-1 record.

“In hindsight, I didn’t expect them to break for such a significant touchdown run right afterward…” said McCoy, who stepped in after Brian Callahan was let go following a five-loss streak in the team’s first six games.

McCoy mentioned, “Initially, I thought we could pin them deep, and the defense had been solid in the second quarter… Looking back, I wish I had opted to go for it instead of punting.”

Previously, McCoy led the Chargers as head coach for four seasons. He added that he didn’t notice any harsh words directed at Ward.

“I think I’m a competitor. Our offense and defense are built that way… The main thing is that we need to be an offensive team,” Ward stated. “Given our current record, we must play aggressively to achieve our goals by season’s end.”

The Titans are set to face the Chargers next Sunday at 1 PM ET, followed by a bye week.
