The 81-year-old president was seen looking confused as he searched for a chair that was not in the middle of the stage in Normandy, France, even as his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, and French President Emmanuel Macron stood upright next to him.
The first lady quickly covered her mouth at the exact moment Biden appeared to hover in his chair.
After the gaffe was caught on camera, the video circulated across social media, with many speculating that Jill was telling her husband not to take his seat yet, but it was not clear exactly what the first lady tweeted.
At one point during the ceremony, cameras also showed Biden with his eyes completely closed, and later, after shaking hands with Macron, he appeared lost, but ushers quickly noticed the president’s confused body language and steered him in the right direction.

Biden also said during a speech at the Normandy American Cemetery that it was the ultimate honor for him to see the U.S. military veterans gathered there wrapped in blankets and saluting.
He turned and said to them, “God loves you.”
“The soldiers who fought here became heroes,” he said. “They knew without a doubt that it was worth fighting for, worth risking their lives for.”
