Cameron Jordan Advocates for Fun in Football

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan is eager to bring back some enjoyment to the game of football. He recently participated in Fanatics Fest in New York, where he candidly shared his thoughts on what he sees as the “silliest rule” in the league today.

Jordan expressed that the current rules around celebrations seem overly restrictive. “If you score a touchdown and you’ve fought through three defenders, why wouldn’t you celebrate?” he questioned, highlighting his belief that excitement is part of the game.

The NFL rulebook has strict guidelines regarding unsportsmanlike conduct, which includes celebration penalties. Interestingly, during the 2021 season, a record number of 61 flags were thrown for such actions. But, as mentioned in reports, the league seemed to have tightened its grip since then. In 2022, only five of those flags actually adhered to the league’s standards.

Data from a penalty tracking site indicated a significant drop in celebration penalties, with only 21 recorded in 2022 and just 17 last season. Still, veteran players like Jordan feel that some light-hearted provocations and celebrations should be acceptable.

“Let’s celebrate,” Jordan added. “It’s fine to be honored. If you want to provoke me, go ahead. Just let me talk about my experience on the field.” His perspective reflects a desire for a balance between competitiveness and enjoyment in the sport.
