Camilla Luddington’s Health Journey
Camilla Luddington, known for her role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” is currently navigating a serious health challenge.
The actress, at 41, recently shared that she felt unusually “lazy” and “tired.” Concerned, she underwent a blood test which led to a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s disease.
She recounted her doctor’s words, saying, “All things look great except for this little thing.” When she heard “autoimmune disease,” her reaction was one of disbelief. She discussed her experience on her podcast, “Called What It Is,” which she co-hosts with former co-star Jessica Capshaw.
Reflecting on how she’s felt since her diagnosis, Luddington admitted, “I’ve gone a little weird.” Hashimoto’s disease, as it turns out, is an autoimmune disorder that results in lower levels of thyroid hormones in the body.
This condition affects approximately five out of every hundred people in the United States. Symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, muscle pain, and mood changes.
After her diagnosis, Luddington felt reassured, stating, “I felt like there was an answer to what I know was ongoing.” However, with her health concerns, she expressed some uncertainty about her feelings, even wondering if she had been misinterpreting her own experiences.
As a mother of two, she described the challenges of being in her 40s. She mentioned experiencing severe fatigue, feeling the need to take naps often, and struggling with daily tasks.
One morning, she woke up only to find that her face and hands were swollen, prompting her to think, “Wow, this is hard to live like this.” It was an eye-opener about how worn out her body had become.
Nonetheless, there’s hope. Luddington shared that she’s been prescribed levothyroxine, a medication that assists with thyroid hormone deficiency, and views it as a “path to recovery.”
Feeling much better since starting medication, she noted her energy levels are improving. “It’s going to be a journey,” she acknowledged, anticipating the road ahead.
Since 2012, Luddington has portrayed Dr. Jo Wilson on “Grey’s Anatomy.” The show is set to return for its 22nd season in October, featuring a talented cast that includes Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and several others.
