Yankees’ Bullpen Troubles Persist with Kamilo Doval
When the Yankees picked up Kamilo Doval at the trade deadline, the plan was to bolster their bullpen with some reliable arms. But now, it feels like fans might hold their breath every time he steps on the mound.
Doval’s performance has been shaky since joining the Yankees, as he allowed three runs in eight innings during a recent game, contributing to the team’s significant 11-1 loss to the Tigers. Unfortunately, Doval’s ERA has swollen to 6.59, with at least one run given up in nine of his 16 outings in New York.
Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Doval’s potential, remarking, “He flashes it. He’s got a big arm with a cutter and a sinker.” But there’s no denying that his inconsistency has raised concerns.
Boone also noted that Doval’s difficulties with accuracy can hurt him at critical moments. While it wasn’t solely Doval’s ineffectiveness that led to issues against the Tigers, he certainly played a role.
Things took a downturn in the game that day when Doval, after allowing a single to Spencer Torkelson, gave up a home run to Riley Green that extended Detroit’s lead to 5-0. Following that, Dillon Dingler capitalized on a misguided slider, contributing to the trouble with a double that brought in another run.
Doval was pulled shortly after, but not before another run crossed home plate due to a base hit by Tim Hill. Catcher Austin Wells expressed some faith in Doval, saying, “I think he’s getting better every time.” It’s a nice sentiment, yet optimism feels hard to come by, especially since Doval didn’t address reporters after the game.
Among the bullpen additions made by general manager Brian Cashman at the deadline, only David Bedner has emerged as a trustworthy option for the closer role. Meanwhile, Jake Bird struggled in his three outings before being sent down to the minors.
Considering the recent challenges facing the Yankee bullpen, it seems that all eyes are on Doval now, with hopes that he can find his footing soon.
