Charges Filed Against Camp Counselor for Alleged Assault
A camp counselor from the University of California, Berkeley, faces eight felony charges after being accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in a campus dormitory, officials reported.
Quaylin Wesley, 27, a former youth basketball trainer and substitute teacher, was taken into custody on Saturday during a summer camp hosted by the university.
Authorities say that while the girl was asleep in her dorm bed, Wesley, who was serving as a night counselor, allegedly fondled her while feigning sleep himself. The situation escalated when he returned to the room multiple times despite the girl’s roommate stirring in bed.
After trying to wake her roommate unsuccessfully, the girl managed to escape to the bathroom and contacted another counselor for help, according to the report.
The university has decided not to disclose details about the camp or its exact location due to the victim’s age and the ongoing investigation.
UC Berkeley police first got wind of the incident around 1:15 a.m., initially classified as just an attempted sexual assault. However, further investigation revealed that it was a full sexual assault. Wesley was subsequently arrested and booked into Alameda County Jail.
Wesley graduated from UC Berkeley in 2021, earning a degree in social work and recently worked as a physical education teacher for third- to fifth-graders at a Francophone charter school in Oakland. His LinkedIn profile also indicates previous roles as a boys basketball trainer and English teacher at various educational institutions.
Prosecutors have filed eight felony charges against him, and he is currently being held at Santa Rita Jail with bail set at $425,000. An arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday morning at Wiley W. Manuel Court.
Efforts to reach comments from the University of California, Berkeley, the Berkeley Police Department, and the French-speaking charter school in Oakland are ongoing.
