I work in customer service as a chat agent, which means I respond to text chats and emails. This Labor Day, my boss was looking for volunteers and I told them I was free and what hours I could work. My boss offered to schedule me to take calls. I haven't answered the phone in years and I don't want to take calls. How can I politely decline if my boss knows my hours?
Is it that you just don't like being on the front line being bombarded by humans one by one on the phone, or do you, as a chat agent, prefer to annoy multiple people at once, pretending that you're only focused on me (i.e., one human), when in reality you're annoying multiple people on chat at the same time?
Yes yes, but am I right?
It's great that you volunteered to help your boss out on your days off, and if your boss needs you on the phone you can say you'd like to work on the chat line.
If your boss just needs you on the phone, I love that spirit of pitching in, rolling up your sleeves, and doing whatever it takes when it comes down to it, and I think your boss will too.
I'm new at my job and have a female boss who is also new, 24. She's a constant complainer and obsesss about small things. Should I tell her that she would be more motivated if I gave her positive encouragement, or would that make the situation worse?
Sorry, but this sounds a lot like the typical attitude of men who complain about women in their personal lives.
First, I'm not sure if the fact that this person is your “female boss” has anything to do with it. What's more relevant is how much experience a 24-year-old woman has in a management role and how much knowledge she has about how to motivate people, which are legitimate potential causes of this behavior.
Whether it's your boss or not, you can't improve your skills at work without receiving feedback, so find the right time and place to have a discussion and explain how you motivate her to do her best work instead of complaining about her style.
