Canada’s Global Reputation Suffering on Trudeau’s Watch His Own ex-Foreign Minister Asserts

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau claims in his new autobiography that Canada’s global standing has declined under the tenure of left-wing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He added that the man who appointed him to his former role as the country’s top diplomat is an ill-prepared leader who is obsessed with politics and makes big statements but never follows through, reports The Canadian Press (CP). Reports.

Trudeau sees himself as a “brand” rather than the leader elected by all Canadians, and has shown little to no interest in engaging with the larger world during his nine years in office.

“I think Justin Trudeau overestimated Canada’s influence abroad,” Garneau wrote in his autobiography. The Greatest Journeys: Space, Politics, and the Pursuit of the Canadian DreamIt will be published by Penguin Random House in October.

While Garneau’s pre-political career in the military and as an astronaut forms the backbone of the book, the final third is devoted to his career as an MP, providing the basis for a harsh assessment of Trudeau.

The 75-year-old was first elected as a Liberal MP in 2008. The party report details how he ran unsuccessfully for leadership in 2013 and then eventually withdrew to support Trudeau, who won in a landslide victory.

He spent his final nine months in Ottawa as foreign affairs minister before Trudeau removed him from cabinet altogether after the 2021 election.

Garneau acknowledges in his book that he was surprised by the decision, but says Trudeau never offered to explain it.

He made it clear that the two men had little in common apart from “liberal values” and were not close.

Garneau has also made something else clear, according to the CP report: He believes Trudeau is all talk and little action on the international stage.

“Unfortunately, Canada’s standing in the world is declining in part because our rhetoric has not always been accompanied by action, by behavior that clearly demonstrates that we mean what we say,” Garneau wrote.

“We are losing trust.”
