Robert MacIntyre gave it his all again Sunday, scoring an incredible victory at the RBC Canadian Open, with his father acting as his caddie as the 27-year-old finally got over the hump.
He shot a 2-under 68 in the final round to win by one stroke over Ben Griffin.
McIntyre entered the final day with a four-stroke lead. He started the final 18 holes the same way he did Saturday, bogeying one hole and then minimizing errors over the first nine.
The Scot added three birdies to finish the round in 33. A rough second half saw MacIntyre stay focused, birdieing the par-four 11th hole before adding back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes.
Things got tense after that, but he made a birdie on the 15th to take a two-stroke lead, then saved par on the 17th to maintain a big lead.
At times it seemed like he was lost in his own head, but that didn’t last long: midway through the round, the static from the broadcast bothered him so much that he asked the rules official to stop.
Many players tried to beat him on Sunday but none were able to. His partner got some late momentum and made the match interesting heading into the final hole.
The former North Carolina player birdied two of the first three holes and finished with 11 straight pars. Griffin birdied the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to put more pressure on McIntyre.
Griffin was one stroke behind the three-time DP World Tour winner with 18 holes to play, when he made par on the 18th hole to finish with a 5-under 65.
MacIntyre didn’t care at all. His approach was nearly perfect, and he was within nine feet of birdie. He played it safe and two-putted to win the 2024 RBC Canadian Open.
It was his 44th start, but MacIntyre is now officially a PGA Tour winner.
