Candace Cameron Bure Reflects on Rejections in Hollywood

Candace Cameron Bure recently shared her reasons for declining various Hollywood scripts during her younger years. She emphasized that, honestly, she wasn’t the kind of kid eager to take risks or use her looks to climb the career ladder. “My morals mattered more to me than success, and my character was always a priority.” Bure explained her approach wasn’t about being self-righteous; it was just who she was. You can hear more about it in her podcast, “Stay True.”

As her career unfolded, she found it simple to reject roles that conflicted with her values. “When faced with a script that pushed my moral boundaries, the choice was pretty clear: I didn’t want to do that,” she explained. There were definitely instances where a script included uncomfortable content, and she had no hesitation in saying, “No, I’m not doing this.”

Still, Bure acknowledged that the pressure from Hollywood could be overwhelming. Watching peers choose different paths sometimes made it tough to stick to her own.

She pointed out people like Melissa Joan Hart, who, after “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” transitioned to more provocative roles. This shift made Bure question her own choices: “You look at them and wonder, ‘Is that how I should grow up in the public eye? Is that how I make the leap into adulthood?’”

While many young stars might lean into the spotlight, Bure chose a different route. For her, these decisions weren’t just about moving up the career ladder but rather about remaining true to herself, even when that meant going against industry trends.

She reflected, “You see a lot of young stars thinking, ‘I’m 18 or 21 now,’ and they feel the need to prove their maturity. It’s a significant decision – how do you handle that opportunity?”

In a recent conversation, Great American Media’s chief content officer expressed confidence in navigating Hollywood’s ever-changing landscape, despite societal critiques.

Bure noted, “The world will always judge you, and you can’t please everyone. Just let it slide sometimes.” For her, self-awareness is vital. “I know who I am because God knows who I am, and I have a loving family at home.”

She added, “It’s so easy to stay grounded with the people you love. When negativity comes your way, you just think, ‘Okay, I can handle it; thanks for your input, but it’s not for me.’”

Bure is married to former professional hockey player Valerie Bure, with whom she became engaged in June 1995, tying the knot a year later. The couple shares three children: daughter Natasha and sons Lev and Maxim.
