Candy bars recalled for undeclared tree nut allergen

Gardners Candies is recalling some of its Cappuccino Meltaway bars because the packaging does not include a tree nut disclaimer.

The Pennsylvania-based company's statement released by the FDA on Friday said the recalled 1.25-ounce packages of candy “may contain undeclared tree nuts (cashews).”

recall Gardner's Candies said in the notice that this was done “after it was discovered that products containing nuts were being distributed in packaging that did not disclose the presence of nuts.”

The lot number of the Cappuccino Meltaway Bars affected by the recall is #082725, with an expiration date of 08/27/25.

Gardner's Candies said the recalled products were part of Meltaway Treat Boxes in various flavors with lot numbers 101625 or 112525.

The notice states that if people who are allergic to nuts or have severe sensitivities to nuts eat the recalled Cappuccino Meltaway bars, they are at “risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.” It says “Yes.”

Tree nut allergies are “one of the most common food allergies in both children and adults.” According to An organization called Food Allergy Research and Education.

According to the recall notice, the affected Gardner's Candies products have not previously caused any illnesses.

Gardner Candies said consumers who purchased the recalled Cappuccino Meltaway or Meltaway Treat Boxes should contact the company for a replacement.

According to the recall notice, the products have been sold in stores nationwide and by mail since September.

The FDA said the company has linked the issue to a “temporary breakdown in the company's manufacturing and packaging processes.” The company has suspended production of its Cappuccino Meltaway bars “until we are confident that the issue has been fixed,” according to the notice.

Gardner's Candies dates back to the late 1800s. The company has stores in multiple cities in Pennsylvania, and its sweets are also sold in more than 100 retail stores in three states, according to the company's website.
