Candy sold at stores across the US, including Walmart, Target and Dollar General, has been recalled due to the risk of salmonella poisoning.
“Palmer Candy Company of Sioux City, Iowa, is recalling “white coated confectionery products” due to possible contamination. Salmonella“Microorganisms that can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in infants, the infirm, elderly, and other people with weakened immune systems,” the FDA announced on its website on May 6.
“Palmer Candy received a liquid coatings supplier Salmonella “It was caused by potentially contaminated raw materials from one of our suppliers,” they said.
The recall was classified as a “Class I” recall, the highest risk level, on August 6th.
According to the FDA website, a “Class I” recall refers to a situation “where there is a reasonable probability that serious health injury or death will occur as a result of use of, or exposure to, the violative product.”
Despite this classification, the FDA noted that no injuries or illnesses have been associated with these products.
According to the announcement, the recalled products included pretzels, cookies and “snack mixes.”
According to the FDA, the products were sold at various retailers across the United States, including Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target and Dollar General.
Additionally, Palmer Candy Company products were sold by distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming, the company said.
According to the FDA statement, Palmer Candy Company has stopped production of the affected products since the initial recall was announced in May.
Salmonella infection, or “salmonellosis,” is “a common bacterial illness that affects the intestinal tract,” according to the Mayo Clinic website.
Salmonella bacteria live in the intestinal tract of both humans and animals. Humans usually become infected with Salmonella through contaminated water or food.
According to the Mayo Clinic, while some people with Salmonella infection don’t experience any symptoms, most people who are infected experience some sort of gastrointestinal upset, such as diarrhea or stomach cramps.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “most healthy people recover within a few days to a week without any special treatment,” but the risk is higher for older adults and young children.
Diarrhea caused by Salmonella can lead to dehydration and be life-threatening, the researchers said.
The Mayo Clinic said people with Salmonella infection should see a doctor if symptoms don’t improve after a few days or if they have a high fever.
