Concerns Over Potential Leadership Change in NYC
On Fox News’ “Hannity,” radio host Hugh Hewitt expressed his belief that if Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani wins in November, Miami could end up absorbing much of New York City’s banking and finance sectors. This comment comes following Mamdani’s recent victory in securing the nomination, which was somewhat anticipated after former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s name surfaced in discussions ahead of official announcements.
During a conversation about the implications of Mamdani’s potential leadership, guest host Kellyanne Conway sought Hewitt’s advice for business owners, particularly in light of Mamdani’s push for tax exemptions for high-income earners. “I think they should do everything in their power to defeat Mamdani, otherwise they might have to pack up and leave,” Hewitt stated. He further emphasized that he expects a significant migration of financial institutions to places like Miami, as they might choose to escape the challenges posed by Mamdani’s policies.
In the wake of Mamdani’s nomination, several notable business figures, including hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, have voiced their concerns. Ackman referred to Mamdani’s plans as “dangerous and economically unfeasible,” emphasizing that cities lack the ability to print money and would not receive federal bailouts in a crisis.
Hewitt labeled Mamdani as the “most radical” candidate and raised alarms for residents of the city, particularly homeowners and parents. He described Mamdani’s stance on housing regulation as troubling, warning that it would exacerbate existing issues of scarcity and high rents. “He’s running a campaign against basic centrism. Honestly, I’ve never seen a candidate this radical nominated for a significant political office in the U.S.,” Hewitt remarked.
He also pointed out that parents in New York City have just as much reason to worry as business owners, as Mamdani’s policies would directly impact educational systems. “If this guy wins, it could be a disaster,” Hewitt added.
Some Democrats, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and independent Senator Bernie Sanders, along with some GOP members, have raised similar concerns about Mamdani’s agenda.
Mamdani has committed to raising the minimum wage to $30, implementing a corporate tax at the state level, and introducing a 2% flat tax on high-income earners. He argues that these measures will generate $10 billion to support initiatives like free childcare, public transportation, and city-operated grocery stores.
Additionally, Mamdani has opposed the Trump administration’s tough immigration policies, promising to end collaboration with ICE and pledging over $160 million toward immigration funding, positioning himself as a strong advocate for legal immigration.
