A Capitol Police officer who served during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot announced Friday that he is running for the Maryland General Assembly.
“On January 6th, as a Capitol Police officer, I defended our democracy from insurrectionists,” Dunn wrote on X Friday, the day before the three-year anniversary of the attack. “Then President Biden awarded me the Presidential Citizens Medal. Today, I'm running for Congress to stop President Trump's MAGA extremism and make sure it never happens again. ”
Dunn, 40, said he left his police job a few weeks ago to run for Congress after serving as a Capitol Police officer for 15 years.
He will take part in a crowded Democratic primary for Maryland's 3rd Congressional District, a heavily Democratic jurisdiction stretching between Baltimore and the nation's capital. Current Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) announced in October that he would not seek reelection.

“On this day, my role was to be a Capitol Police officer. I'm Harry Dunn, and it's about who I am — a father, a Marylander, a Democrat. “Because I swore an oath to protect it.” “Our Constitution is meant to protect our democracy. We were able to protect some members of Congress who we knew were bigots who helped fan the flames.”
“I put my country before myself,” Dunn says.
“The problem is, many of them didn't,” he continued, watching a dramatic reenactment of rioters waving flags and destroying picture frames in the halls as Congressional workers fled. “Some of the same people who stood behind us when we protected them went back to the floor of Congress and stood behind Mr. Trump. They voted to acquit Mr. Trump. And worst of all, they denied the violence and trauma that led to Trump's death.'' Some of their fellow officers also denied the violence and trauma that led to Trump's death. He couldn't stand by. ”
The video cuts to actual footage of Dunn testifying before the committee on Jan. 6, speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill and appearing on network television shows such as “The View.”

“We can't let something like this happen again. And you've heard it from Trump himself. He's desperate to finish what he started this day. I step into my new role today. But we can't do it alone.'' I believe each of us has a role to play in this fight. So we have a democracy to protect, so let's get involved.
