Captain Sig Hansen Reflects on Mortality and Family
Captain Sig Hansen, known for his role on “Deadliest Catch,” is no longer under the illusion of invincibility. At 59, after years battling the harsh conditions of the Bering Sea, he’s now confronting a more personal challenge: his own mortality.
Hansen recently shared with Fox News Digital how recent health scares—like heart issues—have shifted his perspective on both fishing and family. “To be honest,” he said, “it actually opened my eyes. I want to spend more time with them. You’re more grateful; you see things differently as you age.”
“I mean, I want to spend more time with them. You’re more grateful… you see your age and everything and anything different.”

As he reflects on his life, Hansen wants to be a better father, grandfather, and husband. He recalls having survived heart problems during his years at sea, wanting to improve his role at home.
He admitted that his fears regarding deep-sea fishing have intensified over time. “I’m far more afraid,” he confessed. Despite the Coast Guard’s presence, he’s aware of the risks. “At the end of the day… there’s no doctor. That’s scary,” he noted.
Hansen shared a particularly frightening incident after a trip. He was injured and initially brushed it off, only to realize later just how serious it had become. “I woke up and… I was infected and my face looked swollen,” he recounted. In a distressed moment, he even joked with his wife, wondering if she had poisoned him, but soon found himself in the hospital receiving urgent care.
Despite facing various storms in his life, he’s not ready to retire. However, he recognizes that his priorities are shifting. “I’ve been thinking about it ever since,” he said about the danger of his job. Hansen wants to ensure he’s there for his family, reflecting on the years his wife, June, has spent waiting for him.
The veteran fisherman, married to June for over two decades, has two daughters, Mandy and Nina, with June, as well as a biological daughter, Melissa, from a previous marriage. The demands of deep-sea fishing are daunting, but Hansen is striving to make valuable memories with his family.
“Deadliest Catch” airs Fridays at 8 PM on Discovery Channel, continuing to chronicle the challenges faced by fishermen like Hansen.
