A heat wave sweeping across much of the country has turned a Missouri highway into a sort of ramp, allowing at least one car to catch some air.
Albert Blackwell recorded the unusual sight—a sedan launching off a bulge in the asphalt in Cape Girardeau, where temperatures have hit a scorching 90 degrees.
The video showed the vehicle seemingly flying through the air without visible damage upon landing.
Temperatures linked to what some are calling “heat domes” surged even higher on Tuesday, with several cities along the east coast experiencing triple-digit heat.
In Washington, the recently installed air conditioning at the memorial couldn’t keep up, leading the National Park Service to close it for a couple of days.
Cities like Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Raleigh anticipated temperatures surpassing 100 degrees, and Manhattan was forecast to be a toasty 99, potentially breaking century-old records.
“It’s been quite some time since people have experienced this level of heat,” noted Cody Browd, a meteorologist. “According to my records from over 100 years ago, some of these old records might finally be challenged.”
Another video making rounds on social media showed Amtrak passengers trapped inside a stifling train in a Baltimore tunnel after the air conditioning failed.
The extreme heat has caused roads to buckle, leading to numerous cracks and crevices.
Meanwhile, the stagnant hot air is expected to drift further south, potentially roasting more states as the week progresses.
In New Jersey, the town of Toms took the step to evacuate homeless individuals for their safety amid the extreme heat, and many communities have cancelled outdoor events.
Officials have also warned of potential blackouts, advising residents to limit electricity consumption during peak hours.
A tragic incident occurred in St. Anne, Missouri, where a 55-year-old woman was found deceased in her home after a power outage.
For those exposed to extreme heat, experts recommend taking regular breaks from outdoor activities.
