Cardinal Timothy Dolan looks back on 17 years as the archbishop of New York

Cardinal Timothy Dolan Reflects on His Time as Archbishop

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who led the Archdiocese of New York for almost 17 years, expressed his deep gratitude as he transitions to a new phase in his life. He shared his mixed emotions, saying, “Are you sad about anything? Yes, I love being an archbishop.” He feels thankful for the years he has spent in this role and is optimistic about the future, especially about his successor, whom he regards highly.

Dolan reassured his followers that he would remain committed to his priestly duties, looking forward to performing more Masses, baptisms, and weddings. Reflecting on his tenure, he mentioned that God has always been in control. “We might not always see where we’re going, but looking back, we can recognize God’s faithfulness,” he explained thoughtfully.

He emphasized how history is a reflection of divine presence and reminded listeners that “His story!” prevails throughout time. Even when there are uncertainties, he believes that God ultimately triumphs.

Dolan also talked about his unique preaching style, which he developed by embracing his individuality and responding to what he feels is God’s calling. “Italians have great facial expressions. You have to make gnocchi with the dough you got,” he said with a hint of humor. He elaborated that God gives everyone their own “dough”—their talents and paths—and it’s essential to embrace that. The peace and joy this brings are invaluable, he remarked.

In a recent expression of support, Dolan mentioned Savannah Guthrie, whose family is currently concerned about her missing 84-year-old mother. He shared a touching message from Nancy Guthrie, where she expressed her hopes for a safe return. “She’s an amazing woman,” he reflected, recalling fond memories from their long-standing friendship since his elevation to cardinal in 2012.
