Cardinals in the Papal Conclave Are Going In Without Protection

Cardinals Conduct Conclave Without Electronics

CBS News co-host Tony Dokoupil reported that Cardinals are proceeding with the conclave to select Pope Francis’ successor without any electronic devices.

Partial highlights from a recent discussion:

John Allen: It’s important to recognize that this process takes significant time. There’s quite a bit of political maneuvering happening during the conclave. Inside the Sistine Chapel, the focus is primarily on the voting ritual. Each vote takes roughly an hour and a half, and given the number of electors involved, it will likely extend even further.

Dokupil: They just sit there the whole time, right? Don’t they stand up at all?

Allen: No, not really. Most Cardinals will say they’re occupied during the process, either reading their Breviary or praying the rosary. One thing they definitely aren’t doing is scrolling through social media since their devices are taken away.

Dokupil: If they’re doing this for a long time without any electronics, I think kids would describe it as pretty “raw” and “doggy.”

Delia Gallagher: Exactly! But you know, they’re of a certain age where they might be accustomed to it.
