Cardinals penalize Jonathan Gannon for Emari Demercado's outburst on the sidelines

Cardinals Coach Fined After Sideline Incident

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon received a fine of $100,000 from his organization due to a heated exchange with running back Emmari Demercado during their game on Sunday, as reported by several sources.

Gannon notably messed up when he dropped the ball just before entering the end zone, which led to a significant touchdown loss for the Cardinals against the Titans. Video footage of the incident circulated on social media shortly after, showcasing Gannon’s frustration over Demercado’s blunder.

After the play, Gannon approached a visibly shaken Demercado, who was being consoled by teammate Paris Johnson Jr., and continued to yell at him. In a moment of frustration, Gannon slapped Demercado on the chest and forcefully slammed a pad as he walked away, causing his headset to fly off.

The NFL Players Association is currently looking into the situation, although the NFL has decided not to take additional measures.

On Monday, Gannon admitted he wasn’t “in a good mood” and expressed regret over his outburst.

“I mentioned earlier that I need to improve in response to what happened there. My role is to manage issues during the game and remain composed, but I lost my cool. It doesn’t reflect who I want to be,” he stated. “This was my fault, and like everyone involved, we all made mistakes yesterday. Those errors contributed to our loss, and we have to do better moving forward.”

If Demercado had successfully scored instead of fumbling, it could have brought the score to 27-6, essentially securing a win for the Cardinals. Instead, the Titans capitalized on the error, ultimately winning the game 22-21 for their first victory of the season.

Notably, Gannon is the first coach to be fined for an altercation with a player since former Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians was fined $50,000 for a physical confrontation with Andrew Adams during a playoff game in 2022.
