Travis Vocolek has decided to hang up his cleats, as he shared on Instagram on Wednesday. The tight end for the Cardinals announced his retirement from the NFL at the young age of 28, following a serious neck injury he suffered in a game against the Colts last season.
In his post, Vocolek explained, “After multiple visits to doctors and specialists over recent months, I’ve been advised to retire due to the severe neck injury I sustained last season.” He expressed immense gratitude for having pursued his childhood dream of playing professional football for the last three years, stating, “Football has imparted many life lessons and gifted me lasting memories.”
He extended his thanks to everyone who supported him, including teammates, coaches, trainers, and, importantly, the Arizona Cardinals training staff, whom he credited for their exceptional care during this tough period.
Vocolek’s injury happened on October 10 of last year, during a kickoff block when he landed awkwardly after contact with a Colts player. He was unable to return to the game and left the field almost immediately.
In his retirement announcement, he also took a moment to appreciate his wife, Annmarie James Vocolek, married in July 2024. He noted, “A special thank you to my wife who has been by my side through many ups and downs in the NFL,” underscoring her unwavering support.
Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned, “I approached being a professional football player each day with passion, determination, and discipline. I truly gave it my all on the field. Thank you for all the love and support. Lastly, thank you for football!”
Originally from Missouri, Vocolek entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Nebraska. He initially signed with the Ravens but found a home with the Cardinals, where he played his rookie season in 2023.
In 2025, he participated in five games, starting one, ending with a total of two tackles. His NFL career concluded after playing just eight games.
