Tragic Military Plane Crash in Colombia

A military transport aircraft went down shortly after taking off near Puerto Leguizamo, Colombia, on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 66 individuals and leaving many more injured, according to the Colombian military commander.

General Hugo Alejandro López Barreto reported that four military personnel are still unaccounted for. “It’s a tragic loss,” he commented, noting the toll on the nation’s armed forces. He also specified that there’s currently no evidence suggesting the crash was the result of an attack by illegal armed groups.

The incident involved a total of 128 people aboard, with 115 being military personnel, alongside crew members and national police. López Barreto mentioned that 57 individuals were evacuated from the wreckage.

In a video shared on social media, Deputy Mayor Carlos Claros informed that the bodies of those who perished were taken to local morgues, while only two clinics in the vicinity were able to treat the injured before they were transported to larger medical facilities. Claros expressed gratitude towards the residents of Puerto Leguizamo for their urgent response in aiding the victims of this catastrophic event.

Images circulating from the scene showed dark smoke rising in the air, along with emergency vehicles rushing towards the crash site. The aircraft, as reported by Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez, was en route to assist troops in another city within Putumayo.

Local media documented efforts from both emergency personnel and residents, who were seen trying to extinguish fires ignited by the crash amidst thick underbrush. Colombian Air Force Commander Carlos Fernando Silva stated they are still gathering information on what caused the crash, which occurred roughly two kilometers from the airport.

In light of this tragedy, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has reiterated his desire for the modernization of military aircraft and equipment, attributing delays to “bureaucratic difficulties” and emphasizing the need for accountability among officials. He remarked, “If civil and military officials cannot respond adequately, they should be replaced.”

Experts have noted that budget constraints have led to reduced operational hours for the military aircraft under Petro’s governance, potentially affecting crew experience. Eric Sames, an aviation expert, mentioned that the C-130 involved in the accident had been thoroughly overhauled just three years prior, suggesting that parts were not the issue. Instead, he stressed the urgency of understanding the cause of the engine failure.

So far, authorities have found no indications of insurgent involvement in the crash. Defense Minister Sánchez described the incident as “extremely painful” for Colombia, voicing hopes that the nation’s prayers might provide some comfort to those affected.
