President Trump Finds Iran’s Peace Proposal Lacking Amid US Blockade
President Trump is toughening his stance on Iran, expressing that the country’s recent peace proposal falls short, particularly after British forces verified attacks close to the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to enforce a blockade that restricts substantial oil revenue, intensifying economic strain on Iran.
Multiple smaller ships reportedly attacked a large cargo vessel navigating near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, about 11 nautical miles from Iran’s Sirik, as indicated by Iranian news sources. The captain of the northbound bulk carrier communicated this to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which assured that all crew members were unharmed, and there were no reported environmental impacts. Navigators in the area were urged to exercise caution and report any unusual activities while the situation is being investigated.
This incident occurred at a critical maritime junction and arises against the backdrop of increased tensions as Iran has threatened to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media has alleged that their latest peace offer includes a demand for Iran’s governance over the waterway.
“We will not withdraw from the Strait of Hormuz, and returning to pre-war conditions is not an option,” said Ali Nikzad, deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament.
The significance of this location is underscored by the fact that territorial waters typically extend up to 12 nautical miles from a nation’s coast. However, under international maritime law, foreign-flagged ships are permitted to pass through these waters unless they engage in banned activities.
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea permits coastal nations to claim waters up to 12 nautical miles while allowing foreign vessels to transit these areas harmlessly.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday, and the affected vessel was not mentioned in the initial UKMTO warning.
Historically, Iran has employed fast-attack boats to intimidate or capture ships in this strategic area. This incident follows a series of maritime confrontations in the region as tensions persist involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is pivotal for global energy transport. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has labeled the strait a crucial oil chokepoint, noting that in recent years, roughly one-fifth of the world’s liquid petroleum consumption has passed through it.
The details surrounding the small vessel’s identity remain unclear, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
