Carlee Russell skirts jail time after Alabama kidnapping hoax

Carly Russell finally revealed on Thursday why she faked her kidnapping last summer. She caused nationwide panic as she pleaded guilty to two charges and avoided her prison sentence.

A 26-year-old nursing student apologized for falsely reporting that she had seen a baby crawling along an Alabama highway minutes before she disappeared, but she resurfaced two days later with no explanation.

A tearful Ms Russell told the court: “I made a huge mistake trying to deal with various emotional issues and stress.”

“I deeply regret the panic, fear and various negative emotions experienced across the country. , and I specifically want to acknowledge and take responsibility for the pain and embarrassment I have caused to all those directly involved in my search efforts,” she continued.

“I really regret my decision. In retrospect, I wish I had sought help in a completely different way.”

Russell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of making a false report to law enforcement and falsely reporting an incident.

A Jefferson County judge acknowledged that Russell’s actions caused national panic, but said she posed no threat to the community and keeping her in prison was a waste of government resources. Stated.

Instead, she was sentenced to one year of probation, community service, mental health counseling, and ordered to pay $17,974.88 in restitution to the City of Hoover.

Ms Russell’s tearful confession marked the first time she spoke in court and revealed the motive for the mysterious crime for the first time.

She had previously apologized and admitted to making it up, but only through her lawyer.

The strange series of events began on July 13, when Russell called 911 to report seeing a baby crawling on the side of Interstate 459 in Hoover.

When officers arrived just minutes later, they found Russell’s running car, cell phone, wig and wallet, but there was no sign of Russell or the child.

Two days later, she showed up at her parents’ home and police found her “conscious and talking” despite a call saying she was “unresponsive but breathing.”

Russell initially told police she had been kidnapped by a white man with orange hair, but days earlier she had Googled the kidnapping action movie “Taken” and the Amber Alert system. That lie quickly fell apart when the police revealed that.

It is still unclear what led to this mysterious hoax and where she spent those 49 hours.

Russell was initially found guilty of lying to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident, and was sentenced in October. The judge recommended approximately $18,000 in restitution and a year in prison.

Russell’s team found the compensation to be fair, but his lawyer appealed the conviction to avoid a prison sentence.
