Carlos Beltran to Enter Hall of Fame This Summer

Carlos Beltran, the former Mets outfielder, is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. The announcement came Tuesday night, revealing that he received enough votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America to secure his place in Cooperstown. Alongside him, Andrew Jones, who also had a tenure with the Yankees, was also selected.

Beltran garnered an impressive 84.2% of the vote during his fourth year on the ballot, surpassing the required 75% for induction. Jones, on his ninth attempt, received 78.4% of the votes.

Last year, Beltran mentioned his intention to don a Mets cap on his Hall of Fame plaque, which would make him one of just three players to represent the Mets at Cooperstown, along with Tom Seaver and Mike Piazza.

Mets officials are also reportedly considering retiring Beltran’s No. 15 jersey at the end of this season. However, this might be complicated due to the club’s ongoing plans for the Mets’ Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the 40th anniversary celebration of their 1986 World Series win. Planning a jersey retirement for next season may not be ideal either, especially with the risk of games being canceled due to a possible lockout.

Throughout his 20-year major league career, Beltran hit 435 home runs and was selected for nine All-Star teams. He earned three Gold Glove Awards and two Silver Slugger Awards, playing with the Mets from 2005 to 2011 after starting with the Royals and Astros.

Jones, in contrast, was recognized as one of the best defensive center fielders of his era, earning 10 Gold Glove Awards and hitting 434 home runs over his 17-year career. He was named an All-Star five times and spent the majority of his career with the Braves, making two World Series appearances.

Jeff Kent, who had a stint with the Mets for five seasons, will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside Beltran and Jones. Kent was chosen by the Modern Baseball Committee for this honor last month.
