Carlos Carrasco’s offseason work paying dividends in Yankees camp

TAMPA – Carlos Carrasco may not have visited the youth fountain, but he hopes he has found a speed fountain.

The veteran right-hander who signed with the Yankees on a minor league contract last week was encouraged early in his new life, who gave him a fastball and refined his mechanisms to provide the first depth. Ta.

It takes more than that to become a factor for the Yankees at some point this season, but I believe he is at least in a better position by increasing speed.

Carrasco, who turned 38 in March, pitched 5.64 ERA in the 21st innings for the Guardians last season, averaging 91.6 mph on fastball.

The batter crushed the pitch and batted .337 with a slugging rate of .554.

However, from the day the Yankees finished their Guardians season with the ALCS in October, Carrasco went back to his delivery and did the job.

And during Monday's live batting practice session at the club's player development complex, there was still no adrenaline and Carrasco's fastball was sitting between 92-93 mph.

“I felt a bit stuck when I was pushing myself, so I didn't have the strength to throw it in my arm,” Carrasco said Wednesday. “But now I've been working literally for almost four months, so I'm getting there.”

That's part of why Carrasco believes he still has more left in the tank to increase his 15-year career in the Big League.

“I feel [I have] Lots,” Carrasco said. “To be honest, thank you for lifting it up – but I'm going to be 38. But I proved to myself that I can go even further in my last live BP. My pitch is still moving a lot.”

Carrasco has spent the offseason in Tampa for the past 20 years, he said.

Meanwhile, the Yankees went into camp with six big league starters in five rotation spots, but if Marcus Stroman is traded, Carrasco could offer higher-level depth along with Will Warren and JT Brubaker. Masu.

“As we continue to move forward, we see what we have,” manager Aaron Boone said. “But if he has a little more power there, obviously the track record speaks for itself.”
