Carlos Correa Returns to the Astros

Carlos Correa felt it was the right moment to head back to Houston.

After spending seven seasons with the Astros, Correa is making a comeback to his old team, following a significant trade made by the Minnesota Twins just before the deadline.

He decided to waive his non-trade clause with the Twins during the team’s recent restructuring process, which certainly involved a few pivotal players.

“We had discussions with the front office in Minnesota, but things weren’t progressing quite as I expected after the playoffs in 2023,” Correa remarked to MLB.com. “Ultimately, they agreed it was best for everyone if I moved on… I conveyed that there was only one team I was willing to go to.”

Correa is now heading back to the Astros in exchange for minor league pitcher Matt Mikulski, who carries a 7.63 ERA in the single A level, all while taking on the remaining $33 million of his hefty contract, which extends through 2028.

At 30, Correa still has four years left on the six-year, $200 million contract he signed with Minnesota in 2023, a deal that fell through with the Mets over injury concerns.

The Twins are currently in a state of transition. The team is up for sale, and there are reports indicating a goal to minimize expenses, making the franchise more appealing to prospective buyers.

Some reports suggest that the Twins are grappling with a $450 million debt as they aim for a $1.7 billion valuation for the franchise.

This past season hasn’t exactly been kind to Correa, who experienced a career-low OPS of .705, along with seven home runs and 31 RBIs.

In contrast, Correa found greater success in Houston, where he was part of the 2017 World Series win and the team associated with a well-known sign-stealing controversy.

His trade involved not just him but also 10 other players, alongside valuable assets like Joan Duran and Griffin Jacks.

Recently, the Twins have only brought in two players, Byron Buxton and Pablo Lopez, since the end of the 2026 season.
