Ashley Rodon, Carlos Rodon’s wife, voiced her frustration on social media, resonating with many Yankees fans after a controversial call in a recent game against the Astros. The Yankees notched an 8-4 victory in Houston on Thursday night, but the umpire’s performance drew ire.
“The strike zone has been absolutely horrifying throughout the series,” Ashley commented, providing a candid glimpse into the collective sentiment. “Gesh.”
During the game, Carlos navigated a questionable strike zone for six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. A particular call in the sixth inning infuriated the Yankees when José Altuve hit a soft liner toward third base.
However, third base umpire Brian Walsh, who was already a figure of controversy from a previous loss, ruled that the ball was not caught cleanly, which helped the Astros score and narrow the Yankees’ lead to 4-2.
Walsh’s decisions continued to frustrate, especially in the eighth inning when he called several pitches that seemed strike-worthy, adding tension to an already heated match that ended in an 8-7 loss for the Yankees.
Devin Williams was notably upset with Walsh’s calls. As he walked back to the dugout after being taken out of the game, he shouted at Walsh, resulting in his ejection. Manager Aaron Boone then confronted Walsh and was subsequently thrown out as well.
Williams expressed his frustration post-game, pointing out that he had legitimate strike calls overlooked while a pitch much further out of the strike zone was granted. “When you’re delivering good pitches, it changes the dynamics of the game when those calls aren’t made,” he remarked.
