As the F1 world converges on Barcelona for this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, talk in the paddock has largely focused on one driver: Carlos Sainz Jr. With almost half the seats on the 2025 grid still open, it looks like a domino effect will be a decision regarding Sainz’s future before the rest of the line-up is decided.
And now Sainz has admitted that such a decision will be taken “soon”.
Lectures FIA press conference ThursdaySainz was asked about his future and whether he had made a decision about his seat for 2025. The Spaniard admitted that such a decision would be taken “soon”, because the question about his future was “a bit late”. [his] Head. “
“The latest update is that a decision is expected to be made shortly.” Sainz responded on Thursday“I don’t want to wait any longer. It’s obviously been a lot of weeks and months in my head and I think it’s time to make a decision. A decision will be made very soon so hopefully we’ll have something to discuss soon.”
However, Sainz admitted he had not yet made up his mind.
“I haven’t decided yet which one. I’m talking and brainstorming with the team and obviously I need to go home and spend a few days before the Spanish Grand Prix,” Sainz continued. “I was at home but my mind was on the Spanish Grand Prix and not on the future. The weeks after the Canadian Grand Prix were very busy for me, so I haven’t had time to sit down and make a decision. This is what I’m aiming for in the next few weeks.”
It’s not just the F1 media that are waiting for Sainz’s decision, but other drivers too. Kevin Magnussen, whose F1 future is uncertain as his contract with Haas expires at the end of the 2024 season, has pointed to Sainz as the “cork in the bottle” when it comes to the 2025 driver line-up.
“That’s right,” Magnussen said at the FIA press conference on Thursday, pointing at Sainz. “Carlos is the stopper in the bottle. I think a lot of people are waiting for him to make a move, and then all the other pieces of the puzzle will fall apart. That’s the truth.”
So if you’re feeling a bit annoyed about Sainz’s decision, you’re not alone.
Other F1 drivers are in the same situation.
