Carmelo Anthony is still amazed by his first conversation with George Karl.
Karl was hired as the Nuggets’ head coach midway through the 2004-05 season, Anthony’s second season in the NBA.
Anthony appeared on the “7pm to Brooklyn” podcast and reflected on their fraught relationship that began on the jump.
“There’s going to be trouble,” Anthony began.
Anthony explained that Karl’s first game coaching the Nuggets will be against the Bucks. It is said that the Bucs had a bad relationship with Carl and were seeking revenge.
“We get to Milwaukee. After the shootout, he called me into his room and said, ‘Hey, I think you’re overrated.’ You have a lot of work to do. ”
Anthony reflected on his feelings at the time.
“He started that story…Look, I know I have a long way to go in this league. But hey, you just got here!” Anthony said.
Anthony recalled Karl saying that his role on the team was similar to what Detlef Schrempf was under Karl with the Seattle SuperSonics, but podcast host Kid Mero believes him. I couldn’t.

Schrempf was a three-time All-Star and made the All-NBA team in his prime, so he probably didn’t deserve to catch the debris here.
In any case, Karl saw the footage and jokingly asked Anthony to heal an old wound.
Warning: Graphic language
“@carmeloanthony let’s not do this. You’re talking about 20 years ago. Let’s move on,” Carl tweeted with a limp emoji.
“And you were overrated. I wish your game was as effective as Detlef’s,” Karl concluded with a laugh, to which Anthony responded with a bunch of laughing emojis. Ta.
The two would spend time together in Denver until Anthony was traded to the Knicks during the 2010-11 season.
