Texas Senate Candidate Faces Questions Over Campaign Absence
Republican strategist Caroline Wren expressed her concerns on Saturday regarding Texas Democrat Senate nominee James Talarico, particularly questioning his extended absence from the campaign trail. She raised doubts about his capacity to meet the demanding expectations of a Senate role.
Wren stated, “If you can’t handle the campaign trail, you sure as hell can’t handle the U.S. Senate. And that is the important point here.”
During an interview with Breitbart News’s Washington bureau chief Matthew Boyle, Wren challenged Talarico’s explanation for his break from public appearances and criticized journalists for not pressing him for further details after he resumed campaigning on Friday.
Talarico made a recent appearance at the Austin City Limits music festival, following a period in which his campaign noted he was recovering from the flu. His last public engagement had been a virtual event with the U.S. Hispanic Business Council on September 30, which left a gap of nine days between his appearances, as reported by Texas Tribune.
Wren specifically highlighted that Talarico’s last in-person campaign appearance in Texas was on September 26, suggesting that his absence during crucial weeks of a Senate race warranted additional scrutiny.
“I’ve worked on a lot of campaigns, presidential campaigns, Senate campaigns. And the last two months, six weeks of a major national race like this, you are doing multiple campaign stops a day, like sick or not sick, rain, sleet, hurricane, anything,” she remarked, emphasizing the intensity expected in such a race.
She noted that Talarico attended a football game on September 26 and had fundraisers lined up in New York on September 28 and 29. Wren questioned how his narrative about visiting urgent care in Dallas on September 29 could align with his scheduled fundraiser in New York City that same evening.
“I thought that was weird because I knew he had a fundraiser in New York on the 29th at 5:30 p.m. This is where I first started looking at this,” she explained. “I’m confused how you could be at a 5:30 New York City, downtown New York City fundraiser, but also be at a Dallas emergency care facility.”
Talarico’s spokesman, JT Ennis, revealed that the candidate had become ill after conducting over 100 public events and would be returning to campaign activities over the weekend.
After Talarico’s appearance at the festival, Ennis tweeted, “Hate to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but James is still alive and meeting with voters at ACL today.”
However, Wren maintained that Talarico’s reemergence did not allay her concerns about his fitness for the role. She insisted that voters should be informed about any health issues that may impact his campaign.
“If you’re hiding a health issue, whether or not it’s a medical issue or a mental health issue, then it’s something that the voters of Texas deserve to know about before they make the decision on sending a U.S. senator to represent the state of Texas in Washington, D.C.,” she said.
