Carrie Underwood nearly declined 'Before He Cheats'

One of Carrie Underwood’s most well-known songs almost had a different fate. In a recent interview, the 42-year-old singer shared that she once considered not releasing her hit “Before He Cheats,” feeling it might be “too aggressive.” She reflected on her identity, saying, “Because I was like a sweet farm girl… and I thought, ‘Maybe I won’t do this song.’” Yet, she’s pleased to see it still resonates with fans two decades later.

The track was part of her debut album, *Some Hearts*, released in 2005, and it became a single in 2006. Even after all these years, Underwood noted that younger audiences continue to discover it—like when her six-year-old son stumbled upon her music video while she was vacuuming.

“I heard a noise and thought, ‘What is that?’ I walked in and there he was, just lying on the bed, watching it,” she recounted with a mix of surprise and amusement. Following that discovery, he began exploring older music videos, which feels like a fun little connection to his mom’s career.

Underwood and her husband, Mike Fisher, have two sons—Isaiah, 10, and Jacob, 7. Her musical talent seems to run in the family; she and Isaiah recorded “Little Drummer Boy” for her Christmas album in 2020. In describing that experience, she expressed how meaningful it was to be by his side, guiding and sharing those moments with him.

She shot to fame after winning the fourth season of *American Idol* in 2005 and has since released several albums, earning eight Grammy Awards and a record number of CMT Music Awards. Recently, she returned as a judge on *American Idol*, stepping in for Katy Perry, and noted that the show still feels like home to her.

“I hope I can offer some insight or help,” she said, recognizing the journey of the contestants. It seems, in a way, she’s come full circle, offering the support she once received herself.
