Carrie Underwood Reflects on “Before He Cheats”
One of Carrie Underwood’s most recognizable tracks nearly took a different turn. In a recent chat, the 42-year-old singer opened up about her hit song “Before He Cheats,” mentioning that she had doubts about it being “too aggressive.”
“I was just a sweet farm girl,” she recalled. “I even thought about skipping the song.” Yet, despite her initial hesitation, she recognizes that the song still resonates with people, even after two decades.
Released in 2005 on her debut album, *Some Hearts*, the song became a single again in 2006. It’s impressive how, even years later, younger fans are still discovering it—like her son, for example.
Recently, while vacuuming, she heard music from her bedroom and realized it was “Before He Cheats.” Curious, she walked in to find her 6-year-old son lying on the bed, engrossed in her music video. When she asked what he was doing, he simply replied, “Nothing.”
After witnessing his interest, Underwood mentioned that he then started exploring more of her older music videos. It’s fascinating how traditions and legacies can transfer between generations.
With her husband Mike Fisher, Underwood has two sons, Isaiah, 10, and Jacob, 7. She has enjoyed making music with Isaiah, particularly during the recording of “Little Drummer Boy” for their 2020 Christmas album, *My Gift*. “I got to be in the booth with him, encouraging him and listening to his vocals. It was emotional,” she shared.
Underwood’s rise to fame began when she won Season 4 of *American Idol* in 2005. Since then, she’s released eight albums, winning numerous Grammy Awards and holding records at the CMT Music Awards.
After a successful run on the show, she’s now back as a judge for its 22nd season. “Being back feels like home,” she said. Underwood hopes to offer useful insights to contestants, recalling her own experiences.
“We have big challenges ahead,” she mentioned on *Good Morning America* in August 2024, expressing her desire to be both honest and encouraging in her role. It’s clear that her passion remains strong, even after all these years.
