Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing are emerging as promising players for the Mets

Rookie Update: Carson Benge and JJ Weatherholt

Carson Benge, like St. Louis’ JJ Weatherholt, is a notable first-round pick from a Big 12 school in 2024.

Both athletes are 23 years old and seem to be having promising starts to their rookie seasons.

However, there’s a significant contrast between them: Weatherholt, who plays second base, recently secured a lucrative eight-year, $112.5 million extension with the Cardinals lasting through 2034. In contrast, Benge is still under his rookie deal with the Mets.

When asked if Weatherholt’s contract weighed on his mind, Benge laughed it off, saying that it wasn’t really a concern. “I don’t think he’s been thinking about it much either,” he remarked before a game against the Red Sox at Citi Field on Saturday.

This season hasn’t been ideal for the Mets, and as the trade deadline approaches on August 3, it’s likely to get a bit more challenging. However, the emergence of both Benge and fellow rookie AJ Ewing provides a glimmer of hope for fans.

AJ Ewing has settled into the leadoff role as the center fielder and the Mets have indicated that they intend to keep him there for the long haul, despite his flexibility to play second base.

Meanwhile, Benge has been displaying his potential after a shaky start to his debut game. His performance demonstrates that he can significantly contribute in right field with his impressive arm and athleticism.

As the Mets contemplate their approach to the trade deadline—which may involve moving players like Saturday’s starting pitcher, Freddy Peralta—the focus is also on the future. They are eyeing potential trades that could include notable names like AJ Minter or Luke Weaver.

Both Benge and Ewing, along with right-hander Nolan McLean, appear to be part of the team’s long-term plans, although there are no signs that management will offer them substantial contracts anytime soon.

Benge mentioned that his primary focus isn’t on contracts. “I just want to play every day. I’m enjoying being on the field, and whatever the future holds, I’ll give my best and have fun,” he stated.

Playing alongside Ewing enhances the experience for him. Benge expressed optimism about their future, saying, “Every day, we’re prepared to work and play the game the right way. If AJ and I are here for the long haul, we can contribute to a lot of wins.”

This season has seen significant contracts awarded to other rookies who weren’t collegiate players, such as Detroit’s Kevin McGonigle (eight years, $150 million) and Seattle’s Colt Emerson (eight years, $95 million).

As of Saturday, Benji reportedly has a higher WAR than all but McGonigle and Weatherholt, according to FanGraphs.
