JJ McCarthy’s Ankle Injury Will Sideline Him for Several Weeks
Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie season due to an injury, faces another setback after just two games in the 2025 season. He’s expected to be out for two to four weeks due to an ankle sprain he sustained during the game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell mentioned that McCarthy was experiencing significant pain following the injury and is unlikely to participate in the upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Interestingly, the Bengals are also dealing with their own quarterback issues as Joe Burrow may be out for much of the season due to a turf toe injury that requires surgery.
“We don’t plan to have McCarthy for Sunday,” O’Connell told reporters, providing a rather clear outlook on the situation.
During the Vikings’ home opener—a disappointing 22-6 loss—McCarthy was sacked six times. His performance, while thrilling in previous games, didn’t shine this time, as he struggled and threw two interceptions while failing to score a touchdown. In his NFL debut against the Chicago Bears, McCarthy managed to rally in the fourth quarter but couldn’t replicate that magic here.
Interestingly, McCarthy had previously missed the entire 2024 season after being selected in the first round. He tore his meniscus early in training camp, forcing O’Connell to rely on Sam Darnold, who led the team to a 14-3 record. Darnold, however, is now with the Seattle Seahawks, and he’s starting out the season at 1-1.
In his first two starts, McCarthy hasn’t been the most impressive quarterback—his QBR is currently 20.4, ranking last among 33 eligible quarterbacks. He has completed 24 out of 41 passes for 301 yards, managing just two touchdowns against three interceptions.
While McCarthy recovers, the team will turn to 32-year-old Carson Wentz, a seasoned player who has been in backup roles for both the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Moreover, the Vikings are also dealing with injury concerns for veteran running back Aaron Jones Sr., who has suffered a hamstring injury. It’s a tough time for the team as they navigate through these injury hurdles.
