Mexican Drug Cartel Challenges Government

An armed group, identifying itself as the Sinaloa Cartel, has released videos and social media messages criticizing the Mexican government and its dealings with other drug cartels. This comes just days after the gang displayed multiple bodies from an overpass in Mexico.

In one video, a gunman states, “We will not kill innocent people,” while surrounded by other armed individuals holding signs that read “CDS” and “MF,” referring to the Sinaloa Cartel and a faction called Maiito Flaco.

The messages also assert that the group killed ten men in Zacatecas over the weekend, hanging five from overpasses and leaving the rest scattered across the city. Reports indicate that the victims included local politicians and business figures.

The cartel reached out directly to Zacatecas Governor David Monreal Ávila, alleging that the killings were carried out following orders. They reminded Monreal of an agreement with the Sinaloa Cartel and emphasized that they had met the deadline tied to this agreement. A threat was also issued, stating that if he or his staff failed to uphold their end, they would face consequences.

Mr. Monreal is affiliated with Mexico’s ruling MORENA party, which has come under scrutiny lately after the U.S. Department of Justice charged Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine close associates. The indictment accuses Rocha Moya of having ties with the Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa cartel in exchange for money and political influence.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, representing the MORENA party, recently defended Rocha Moya, claiming the charges lack evidence and are politically influenced by the U.S. far right, which has sparked international tensions.
