FBI Investigation into LA Schools Superintendent Carvalho

Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of Los Angeles schools, is under scrutiny as an FBI investigation unfolds. Amid growing demands from frustrated parents, there’s pressure for him to resign from his high-paying role, which earns him around $440,000 annually.

Investigators are digging into Carvalho’s past, revealing some unsavory details, including questionable selfies and inappropriate email communications with journalists.

On Wednesday morning, federal agents conducted searches at various locations connected to Carvalho, such as his office in downtown Los Angeles, his home in San Pedro, and several properties in the Miami area. They are looking into allegations of fraud and corruption, according to officials.

Following the raids, members of the LAUSD board held an emergency meeting. However, after an extensive four-hour discussion, they reached no resolutions.

This situation has brought Carvalho’s personal life into the limelight, including accusations of an affair with a reporter during his tenure with Miami Public Schools.

Leaked emails between Carvalho and Tania Delzurriaga, a reporter for the Miami Herald, surfaced, featuring messages like, “Will you be totally offended if I jump into your arms next time we meet?” and “Love, love, love. xoxoxo.” After the emails came to light following his new appointment, Carvalho denied any affair initially but later acknowledged that, while the emails were real, they were indeed “inappropriate.”

Delzurriaga left her job at the Herald after the emails were published and faced further job loss at the Boston Globe.

A separate Instagram account also emerged in 2020, showcasing topless photographs of Carvalho, indicating more to the story. The account, named “I have a lover” with the handle @superintendentofmiami, gathered a modest following before it was eventually taken down.

On December 12, 2020, the first topless photo of Carvalho appeared, featuring him with a playful pose and a caption promoting self-love. The account contained various images, some depicting three naked women and discussing themes of cheating and dishonesty.

Statements like “Cheating is a choice, not a mistake,” were posted, alongside a description that claimed a past infidelity by the account holder.

The LAUSD board is now faced with a choice: keep Carvalho in place, find a new leader, or appoint an interim superintendent. They have adjourned their special meeting and will reconvene the following day to continue discussions.

In the meantime, the district’s operations continue as usual, expressing gratitude to its staff, families, and students for their commitment to the school community.

As for the specific reasons behind the federal searches, those details remain unclear.

Efforts have been made to reach both LAUSD and Delzurriaga for comments on the current situation.
