Looking back at the 2024 election, veteran political strategist James Carville called it “a tough election for Democrats.”
“Fortunately, the thing that makes me most optimistic about the Democratic Party is that there is so much potential talent in the Democratic Party,” Carville said Monday on MSNBC's “Morning Joe.”
“And I hope that whoever these people are, they'll be up and running in 2028 right after the 2026 midterm elections. But two things can't be true at the same time. A landslide. “It wasn't, but it was a very difficult election for the Democratic Party.”

Now that President-elect Trump has won every battleground state and widened his lead in solidly red states, Democrats and analysts are looking at how to adjust their strategy for 2028.
Carville Read Friday's article Peter Baker, chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, said of what appeared to be a “landslide” victory for Trump that the president-elect won the popular vote by a historic margin. Carville argued that Democrats cannot continue on their current path and hope for future victories.
Mr. Carville was one of the most optimistic Democrats heading into the November election.
In October, he wrote an op-ed for the Times titled “Three Reasons I'm Convinced Kamala Harris Will Win,” in which he predicted that Trump would underperform in battleground states. He also predicted that Vice President Harris' campaign would be even more successful, given that she was able to raise a huge amount of money in a short period of time.
“If the Cheneys and AOC understand that the Constitution and democracy are what they vote for, then all true conservatives and true progressives will get it,” he wrote. “The vast majority of Americans are rational, rational, well-meaning people.
