Democratic strategist James Carville, who has been a vocal critic of President Biden in recent days, on Friday again called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race.
In an interview on this week’s “Press Club” podcast From MediaiteIn the speech, recorded before a key news conference concluding the NATO summit, Biden suggested there was no path to defeating Trump in November.
“If the people do not want to win, there can be no victory.” Carville said“They clearly don’t want Biden,” said a former senior adviser to former President Bill Clinton.
Asked what would happen if Trump was re-elected, he suggested it would be “the end of the Constitution.”
“I think we’re going to see NATO collapse. We’re going to be expressing authoritarian and totalitarian values. We’re going to continue on our path of lawlessness. I don’t know what else to say,” the political commentator responded to Media It editor-in-chief Aidan McLaughlin. “They’ve already said it. This whole thing about Project 25 is pretty much predictable.”
“It’s so tragic and so antithetical to the very essence of our country that I almost want to laugh it off,” he said of the conservative policies, “but I believe the catastrophe that awaits will literally mean the end of the Constitution. I really do.”
“If we lose, we lose the Constitution,” he added.
Biden’s comments come as he continues to face intense political headwinds following a shaky performance in last month’s presidential debate, in which the incumbent stumbled and spoke hoarsely onstage, raising questions within his own party about his age, mental health and ability to retake the White House.
Following his performance in the debate, several Democrats in both the House and Senate have already called on Biden to drop out of the race.
Carville said earlier this week that it was “inevitable” that Biden would withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
“I’m not making predictions. I’m just saying this is inevitable,” the pundit told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on Monday. “He’ll come to a conclusion. People will give him a message. He’ll understand, his family will understand. They’ll pray and they’ll make the right decision.”
McLaughlin also asked Carville about a recent New York Times op-ed in which he first suggested that Biden was dropping out of the race because “he’s getting older and, unlike most people, he has a hazy idea of what the job entails.”
Biden and his supporters are adamant that he has no plans to drop out of the race. At a press conference Thursday night, Biden said he is “the best person ever to run for president.”
“I believe I’m the best person to govern,” the president said, “and the best person to win. But there are other people who can beat Trump. But it’s all starting from scratch. And, you know, we’re talking about the money we’ve raised. We’re not bad.”
“The fact is, the thing to consider is that I believe I am the best person to run for president. I beat him once and I will beat him again,” he added.
At a rally in Detroit on Friday night, the president reiterated his vow to continue his campaign, arguing that it was voters, not the media or politicians, who made him the candidate.
