Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, known for 'Mortal Kombat,' has passed away at 75

Actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, well-known for his role in “Mortal Kombat,” passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 75.

According to his manager, he died peacefully in Santa Barbara, California, surrounded by family.

The cause of death was complications related to a stroke.

His family released a heartfelt statement mourning his loss, describing him as a “rare soul” who was generous, thoughtful, and wholly dedicated to his craft.

“His loss is incalculable,” they mentioned, adding, “My heart is with his family, friends, and everyone who loved him.”

No comments have been made by Tagawa’s representatives in response to requests for more information.

Tagawa is survived by his wife, Sally Phillips, whom he married in 1984. They have a son, Karen, and two daughters, Vern and Kana. His performances in films like “The Last Emperor,” “Snow Falling on Cedars,” and “License to Kill” helped define his career.

In recent years, he appeared in “The Man in the High Castle,” where he portrayed Shinsuke Tagami—a character he found quite relatable. He described his role by reflecting on the complexities of being good, bad, or even ugly, noting that Tagami was distinct for advocating for peace.

Prior to pursuing acting, Tagawa had a diverse range of jobs, including being a celery farmer, a limousine driver, and even a photojournalist. He lived on Kauai with his family.

In addition to his wife and children, he also leaves behind two grandchildren, River and Thea.
